WGP asked Bear Mountain’s Megan Ratcliffe to put together an outfit designed for cold and wet weather. Here is what she came up with...

The Victoria, B.C.-based second-year PGA of BC Professional knows about playing in winter conditions. Wearing primarily Titleist / FootJoy products available in the Bear Mountain Resort Golf Shop, she has put together an ensemble guaranteed to let you play your best even under the most challenging conditions.

Umbrella

Designed for performance in all weather conditions, the Titleist Tour Double Canopy Umbrella provides golfers with unmatched protection in wet weather courtesy of 68” of coverage, fibreglass shaft, ergonomic handle, and a premium anti-inversion system.

The Titleist Tour Double Canopy Is “Built To Perform For The Best Players In The World.”

Rain Jacket

Having a waterproof jacket during the wet season is essential. I like the FootJoy HydroLite jacket as it is water-resistant and flexible. Its HydroLite™ System makes for a 100% waterproof shell. Combining lightweight fabrics with a bonded liner makes this DryJoys piece the lightest garment ever produced by FJ. One downside this jacket carries is that it is very lightweight. Layering underneath would be necessary during colder days.

Four-Way Stretch: The FootJoy HydroLite Rain Jacket’s Performance Fabric Offers Extreme Comfort & Allows Complete Range Of Motion During The Golf Swing.

Rain Gloves

Rain gloves play a huge role during wet days on the golf course. Rather than using a regular glove, FootJoy RainGrip gloves soak up moisture. They help your hands relax when things might get slippery.

The FootJoy RainGrip Glove’s autosuede™ Knit Palm Provides An Unmatched Grip In Wet Or Humid Conditions, Conforming To Both Your Hand & Club For A Secure Grip & Maximum Control.

Mittens

My FootJoy mittens are my favourite accessory during the winter months. They keep my hands warm and toasty between shots when I am playing. These gloves also have secret pockets on the top that are the perfect size for hand warmers.

Headband

I prefer wearing a hat and a headband rather than a toque. The brim of the hat provides key protection for your eyes from the rainfall that a beanie can’t give you. A good headband like the Women’s Under Armour Around Town model adds a layer for your ears to ensure they stay warm.

The Women’s UA Around Town Headband With Special Linings For Extreme Comfort & Warmth Is Cold-Weather Gear That Keeps You Out There When Others Stay Inside.

Waterproof Golf Shoes

There’s nothing worse than feeling as if you are stepping in a puddle with each stride. Waterproof, yet flexible, shoes, are essential for the wet season. I also like to ensure that my golf shoes have good spikes for wet and slippery conditions. Being stable during the golf swing is very important. FootJoy shoes check all those boxes for me.

Rain Pants

Rain pants are a key item I keep in my golf bag at all times. Not only do they keep you dry, but they also provide warmth during the cold temperatures. Rain pants address both of those factors for me, whether I am playing or teaching. The ones I am wearing in the image at the start of the article are Nike StormFit rain pants which actually are not made anymore. There are a number of different good options out there but the gold standard would be those made with GORE-TEX, which is now a truly flexible waterproof fabric. The waterproof protection remains and now provides maximum stretch and breathability with the same durable design. You can expect to pay up to four times as much for GORE-TEX but this is truly a once-in-a-lifetime purchase, so if you can afford it, make the investment.

Closing Thoughts

Having the correct equipment for the winter season is very important. The second a player begins to feel too wet or cold, they start losing focus on the golf course. The person who stays the warmest and driest the longest will have the best result in the end.
