From PGA to LIV, to LPGA: here are six of the most exciting tournaments coming this year you won’t want to miss!
Watch these tournaments to be a part of the buzz on the putting green and in the club house:
LIV Golf Mexico | February 24-26 | El Camaleon Golf Course, Mayakoba (Mexico)
LIV Golf, in its second season, promises some excellent golf entertainment for its tournament viewers.
Its success may obviously affect how the PGA responds to keep its players, sponsors, and fans loyal to its traditions.
Golf fans, despite the ongoing controversy, are very interested to see the players who have left the PGA to become part of the LIV league. The politics of this league and the PGA will ultimately garner a lot of attention as the LIV players compete alongside the PGA players at the majors this year.
Course-wise, El Camaleon features beautiful ocean views. One unique feature sure to intrigue the camera is a cenote (cave) on the first fairway. Coined, “The Devil’s Mouth”, this sacred-to-mayan-culture water feature is complete with stalactites and an underground pool. An errant shot will surely be a viewer highlight.
The Masters | April 6-9 | Augusta National Golf Course, Augusta, Georgia (USA)
All roads in men’s professional golf lead to Augusta. This is a “can't miss” watch of any year for any golf fan.
The ongoing and aforementioned “LIV Golf versus PGA Tour” drama will likely be a big part of the commentary this year, in particular.
However, the event always delivers exciting golf as tensions are high for players competing to take home the most coveted piece of golf apparel: The Green Jacket.
An interesting sideline story is the lengthening of Hole 13, new this year. The hole had previously been documented as the third easiest hole on the course. The added length promises a change of strategy. Cutting the corner will be more difficult and clearing the water that fronts the putting green may be riskier!
The US Open | June 15-18 | Los Angeles Country Club, Los Angeles, California (USA)
The US Open is another major men’s event that draws the best golfers. Over 9,000 golfers compete each year for just 156 qualifying spots.
In the past, this tournament has been known for boasting the most prize money. The purse amount will be announced the week of the tournament.
This year’s tournament is being held at the Los Angeles Country Club for the first time. The club sits on very valuable real estate in Beverly Hills, giving up its private reputation to “only” 22,000 tickets for each day of the tournament. The exclusive setting is sure to be a media focus, as well as the club’s timely renovations.
Apparently, there are a few Hollywood celebrities as members, so it will be interesting to see if there are any famous faces in the crowd!
The US Women’s Open | July 6 - 9 | Pebble Beach Golf Links, Pebble Beach, California (USA)
Only the best players qualify to play in the Women’s US Open. You can be sure that whoever wins the trophy will be worth watching.
This year’s venue is very special as it is the first time Pebble Beach has hosted a women’s major tournament. Having such a renowned venue like Pebble Beach host a women’s event is a victory for the future of women’s competitive golf.
The well-known setting will complement the golf tournament coverage.
The British Open | July 16- July 23 | Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Hoylake Wirral (England)
The British Open is the oldest golf tournament in the world. It is also one of the most watched majors of men’s golf.
Locals are hoping for a repeat win for Rory McIlroy. He won the Claret Jug at the same course in 2014.
Royal Liverpool is known for its many O.B. Stakes. This could make the end rounds very exciting as momentum can change quickly.
CP Women's Open | August 24-27 | Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club, Vancouver, BC (Canada)
Managed by Golf Canada, the CP Women’s Open is being held this year at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club in Vancouver.
This tournament has big shoes to fill as the 2022 CP Women’s Open at Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club was awarded LPGA’s Tournament of the Year. Golf Canada will no doubt be trying to make this event even better.
It is possible to watch the event on TV, but this is a rare opportunity to see all your favourite golfers live. Go to Vancouver for the first two days to see all the players before the cut. Or go for the final rounds to cheer on the winners.
